Taking Care of the Human Frame
What is good or correct posture?
Correct posture means keeping all the various joints and body segments in alignment at any given moment. Proper posture involves tucking the pelvis backwards, tucking the buttocks under, holding the abdomen in as well as possible, lifting the chest and tucking the chin in slightly. The shoulders should be slightly back and relaxed. Correct posture helps keep all our body parts balanced and supported. An erect posture (when standing) in which we could draw a straight line from the earlobe, through the shoulder, hip, knee, and into the middle of the ankle, is therefore a most desirable and highly effective position for the body structure and proportion. The advantages of proper posture are several. It:
- Is able to completely and optimally attain balance and proportion of the body mass and framework.
- Optimises breathing and affects the circulation of bodily fluids
- Helps our muscles to function properly and efficiently
- Keeps our back and spine healthy and reduces back and neck pain
- Enhances our appearance
