Most people overlook the importance of water in our diet.

Why is drinking water and staying hydrated so important for our health?

  • The average human body consists of more than 70% water. Blood, kidneys, heart, lungs and brain are mostly water.

  • Our body loses water every day through its normal functions such as urine function and sweat. It needs to be replaced to maintain the body's adequate hydration.

  • Cells in our body are constantly rebuilt. Blood transports nutrients and oxygen to the cells. It also cleans away waste materials left as a by-product. Blood needs to be adequately hydrated in order to undertake this role effectively.

  • Hydration in saliva and stomach secretions helps digest food.

  • In body fluids, hydration helps lubricate joints, cushion and protect organs

  • Kidneys need water to filter toxins and waste products.

  • Hydration helps with fat loss. Not only is water a natural appetite suppressant, in a hydrated body, fat gets more easily metabolized (See related article).

  • Proper water intake can help decrease the risk of certain cancers, prevent the formation of kidney stones and increase our level of energy

  • Water hydration keeps skin healthy and glowing. It also help combat skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and spots.

Finally, even though water is universally recognized as the fluid of life by many, we can get it from other sources like juice, diet sodas or sports drinks.

A note about caffeine

Drinks that contain caffeine may have an energizing effect on our body. However, caffeine acts as a diuretic causing our boy to lose fluid rather than retaining it.

Water is one of the easiest ways to stay hydrated and a smaller amount of it will do us more good than a larger amount of many other beverages.

A healthy tip

Add lemon juice to your water. It adds flavour and will enhance your health.
